Highway 273 Shuts Down Due To Fire, Reopened

Smoke is visible throughout much of Redding due to a building on fire near North State Recycling.

Witnesses have reported flames seen at a building that contains latex materials at 7200 Pitt Road around 1:35 p.m. today. The fire is at a company called VSS Emultech.

One person has suffered third-degree burns to his face and arms, authorities said. They are discussing possible evacuations in the area and will be shutting down Highway 273 in the vicinity.

The fire is contained but officials are worried about hazardous materials in the area, dispatchers said.

(UPDATE) 2:42 p.m.- CHP reporting traffic has been shut down at Happy Valley Rd. Caltrans will be shutting down all of Highway 273 within a half-mile radius of the fire.

(UPDATE) 2:52 p.m.- Our reporter Colin Lygren has reported the explosion was caused when crews were welding on a tank they thought was empty. Some material had dried and caught fire. He will be live with more details at 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) 3:15 p.m.- Caltrans reporting Highway 273 has reopened in both directions, Pitt River still closed.
