Family and friends of Paradise fire victim Tommy Higgins say he's spent much of his life helping others, that they are hoping others will now step up to help him.
Higgins home on Winding Way was destroyed by fire Christmas Day. He's lucky to have made it out safely. Higgins was asleep when he was awakened by the fire, and braved intense flames to save a dog that was trapped on the front porch of the two story home. The family he shared the home with was not home at the time.
Higgins is well known in Butte County as founder of the Skyway House, and worked with the local Drug Court for years to help hundreds of people beat their drug and alcohol addictions to start new lives.
His home was built by his parents in the 1980's. He lost all of his belongings in the fire, and is on disability due to medical issues. Family members tell Action News Now that Higgins is staying in a local Motel.
A fund has been set up at the Bank of America, 6295 the Skyway in Paradise, to help Higgins during this extremely difficult time. Donations can be made to Account #164103499289, in Tommy Higgins' name.
