Head-on Crash on Highway 99

A head-on crash on Highway 99 near Biggs sent five people to the hospital with injuries this morning.
It happened just before noon ... south of Perry Road.
The CHP says 16 year old Cora Piper of Carmichael was speeding when she crossed two sets of double yellow lines in an attempt to pass, and lost control before swerving into the path an oncoming car.
Officer Brad Logan told us at the scene that, "it's safe to guess in excess of 7t mph. Guess at this point assuming traffic going 55-60 she's flying by, safe to say faster than should be."
Piper, who only had a learner's permit, received major injuries.
The driver of the other car, 63 year old Herman Ellis of Chico, also had major injuries.
Ellis retired in 2009 after more than 30 years at Chico State as Associated Vice President of Student Affairs, and Director of Student Activities.
His wife and son, and a passenger in Piper's car, received minor to moderate injuries.
Officers say Piper will likely be cited.###
