STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - A man who hit a Stockton police K9 with a claw hammer was fatally shot by police.

KFSN reports that the man died Tuesday night at a hospital.

No one else was injured.

The Stockton man's name and age were not released. The dog will recover from his injuries.

Police Spokesman Joe Silva says officers were called to a house following reports a drunken man wielding a hammer and destroying the home.

Officers told the man to put the hammer down and he refused. Police used Tasers on him but he was not subdued.

The police dog was sent to take him down and the man hit the animal with the hammer. Police ran to rescue the dog and the man tried to hit an officer with a hammer. He was then shot.
