Early this morning the Chico Police department responded to reports of shots fired at the 800 block of Rancheria Drive in Chico.
The woman who reported the incident just before 1:20 a.m., stated that a bicyclist had ridden by and fired shots at her and her friends while they were on a balcony.
As officers arrived in the area, a bicyclist located police and stated that he had been shot at while riding his bike on the 800 block of Rancheria Drive. Officers, along with the bicyclist returned to the scene and Joshua Douglas, 29, of Chico, walked out of his apartment and stated that he had accidently fired his gun while arguing with the bicyclist.
Chico Police said the reporting party was a friend of Douglas’ and she claimed that the bicyclist had fired the shots in an effort to protect her friend.
The bicyclist identified Douglas as the person who fired at him. Douglas was arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm and booked into Butte County Jail, the gun was collected as evidence.
Officers say that it appears Douglas was using the gun to scare away the bicyclist.
