A Northern California man is facing life in prison following his conviction in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy who was wearing a bulletproof vest that saved his life.
Prosecutors tell the Times-Standard of Eureka a Humboldt County jury found 56-year-old William Lloyd Nelson guilty Monday of attempted murder. Authorities say Nelson shot Humboldt County Sheriff's Deputy Bang Cao on May 6 when Cao and a sheriff's sergeant were serving a court-ordered eviction notice at Nelson's Shelter Cove home.
Cao was shot in the chest, but the round was stopped by his bulletproof vest.
Nelson is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 15.
