A handful of businesses in Downtown Gridley have closed up shop in recent months leaving several vacancies. The city's Chamber of Commerce Manager Jerry Fichter says the downtown area does not have the visitors it had before. Four shops have closed up on the same street in the past few months. Fichter says big businesses moving the area and a lack of shoppers has hurt downtown.
"One vendor closes before its time, why then the next one sees it, and the next one, and the next thing you know you have got 20 or 30 vendors that are closing down."
She says the chamber is working on attracting more people to the downtown area with the events like the farmers market. Fichter hopes maybe more cafes, bike shops, or gardening centers will come to the area.
