A new report has the Butte College Fire Department ranked in the top 10 nationally for highest return on investment.
Cadets pay about $4,300 to attend this program. Once they graduate there’s a very good chance they’ll make that money back…and then some.
“These guys are getting jobs,” said Butte College Public Safety director Mike Maloney. “And jobs in the fire service pay pretty well and they also have great benefits.”
One cadet looking to cash in on this academy is Tim Hoekstra of Ripon. He spent a few years studying financial marketing at Cal State Stanislaus but ultimately decided to follow his true passion: firefighting.
‘I thought it was my calling to be a firefighter,” he said. “I knew (Butte College) was one of the best academies and I heard you get a lot for your money.”
The return on investment for the Butte College Fire Academy is five times the cost of one school year.
The study was conducted by Fire Science Online.
