Grandmother and 3 Children Found Safe After Side Trip

UPDATE: The Shasta County Sheriff's Office says a grandmother, and three other children missing since Friday have been found safe.

Authorities say a woman and three children were located today after a side trip turned into an unexpected overnight trip.

Shasta County Sheriff's deputies say Julie Irene Gobel, 47, her two grandchildren Cory Levi Gobel, 8, and Kaitlin Renee Francis, 9, and friend Kayden Renee Nikola, 9, all of Oak Run, were reported missing after they didn't show up after leaving Indian Springs School.

Deputies said the group was heading back when Gobel decided to explore a quarry about eight miles south of Big Bend.

They went to leave while it was still daylight but their vehicle got stuck in the mud and a locked gate kept them from leaving, deputies said. They built a fire and slept in the car overnight.

This morning, all four walked about a mile to a home where they contacted authorities at about 9:15 a.m.
