GOOD NEWS UPDATE: Army vet found 'bruised & battered,' but alive

UPDATE: According to his sister, the army veteran who disappeared last Wednesday in the Trinity Nat'l Forest has been found alive. The details surrounding how he was found were not immediately available, but according to his sister, Shelley Nisbit, the man who found him is named Tim Thompson.

An army veteran has disappeared while on a hike in Trinity County, where several lightning-sparked wildfires rage. According to his family, David Smith, 25, was last seen Wednesday, July 29, near New River Trail close to Denny, California. His partner reported he was last seen around 3:00pm, when they became separated. Thursday, the U.S. Forest Service reported several wildland fires in the area as part of the River Complex. The Forest Service says 18 fires have been reported in the immediate area, worrying his family. They say he may have been injured, or has been overcome by smoke. The Trinity County Sheriff's Office confirms a missing persons' report has been filed, and the agency is working to find the resources to begin looking for him. According to Smith's family, he is an avid outdoorsman, and stays in close contact with his family.
