SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Golden Gate Bridge officials say work on a suicide barrier for the iconic span will be delayed two months.
The Marin Independent Journal reports that the original steel selected for the project cannot be manufactured in large enough quantities in the United States.
So officials picked different steel that can be made domestically and satisfy federal "Buy America" requirements.
Talk of installing a suicide barrier began in the 1950s. Officials made an initial attempt in the 1970s, considering and then dismissing 18 designs.
The steel net project is pegged at $76 million.
More than 1,400 people have jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937. Most jumpers die of massive internal injuries, broken bones and skull fractures. Some die from internal bleeding with others drown.
