Gold Nugget Days Celebration kicks off Thursday

The Paradise Gold Nugget Days. The celebration which runs April 21st through 24th ... and commemorates the 1859 discovery of the famous 54-pound Dogtown nugget. This year’s theme is “Trails of Gold.”

The celebration gets under way with the Gold Nugget Queen Contest on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Paradise Performing Arts Center. The Queen and her court reign over the weekend’s festivities.

The Donkey Derby, Saturday April 23, recreates the original trek delivering the Dogtown nugget to what is now Old Magalia, with each donkey carrying a sack weighing 54 pounds.

The Gold Nugget Parade takes place at Noon along the Skyway, followed by more activities on the Grounds of the Gold Nugget Museum, including the Children’s Costume Contest, at 2 p.m. and the Doggone Doggie Contest, Sunday, at 10 a.m.

The western musical, ”When the Coyot’ Calls,” debuts at the Paradise Performing Arts Center Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The creator describes it as a musical love story told in song, poetry and dialogue.
