An anonymous donor in Redding dropped nearly $500 worth of silver into a Salvation Army Red Kettle on Tuesday.

Salvation Army officials say they were counting donations Tuesday night when they discovered the 31 ounces of pure silver. Kettle donations have been down this year so the donation comes at an excellent time.

The anonymous donor made the drop at the Shopko in Redding, The bell ringer volunteering at the department store said she knew the donation was out of the ordinary because the kettle became a lot heavier right away.

The silver is currently estimated to be approximately $488.
