Gas prices are on the rise once again in the North State.

Average retail gas prices rose 1.3 cents in Chico over the past week, according to a GasBuddy survey of 76 different gas stations throughout the city. This rise brings the average cost of a gallon of gas to $2.51.

"The first week of January seems to be on par with prior years," said Jeff Pelton, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. "History has shown that 12 of the past 16 Januarys have yielded the worst demand for the year.”

Local gas prices are outpacing the national average, which fell 1.8 cents last week. The national aveage for a gallon of gas hovered around $1.97 over the last couple weeks.

Gas prices in Chico are approximately 6 cents higher than the same time a month ago and around 14 cents higher than this time last month.

Pelton said turmoil in the global financial markets should begin to edge prices lower as it gets later into the month.
