A gas leak prompted evacuations and detours in the area of East 7th and Arbutus Avenues Monday morning.

PG&E officials say crews were responding to a natural gas leak. When they started digging to expose the leak, a fitting came loose sending gas into the air.

Chico firefighters were called to the gas line rupture around 10:30 a.m. Chico Police and Fire crews went door to door evacuating homes within a two block radius of the leak, however the gas was shutoff around 11:30 a.m., and all evacuations were lifted around noon.

Traffic was detoured in the area, and a road closure remains in place at E. 7th Avenue between Sunset and Arbutus.
