A gas leak in northeast Chico that closed several streets and forced the evacuation of several nearby residents has been stopped by Pacific Gas and Electric Company crews.
According to the Chico Fire Department, a gas main broke as construction crews were working in the area of Wanderer Lane and Swallowtail Lane near Mariposa Avenue.
Crews turned the gas off and safely made repairs without any further impact to residents.
PG&E is conducting an investigation into the leak, and officials say it is possible the construction company could be forced to cover the costs associated with repairs.
PG&E spokesperson Paul Moreno told Action News Now the construction crew was using a backhoe to excavate downwards in a situation in which they should have been digging by hand.
