After spending the last six months on the sidelines the Chico Police Department's gang unit is returning to the street.
The five-member team was disbanded as part of the department's reorganization last November.
After returning to patrol for six months, department leaders say they began to notice a spike in gang violence in the area.
Although the team of five will be tracking about a thousand gang members in the Chico area, department leaders are hopeful they'll make a big difference.
"When you have resources that can be focused and dedicated on that task and they are good at what they do. They can be very, very effective," Lt. Mike O’Brien said.
The members of the gang unit will be replaced on patrol by three school resource officers after they are pulled from that beat at the end of the school year.
