FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A Fresno woman who drowned her infant son in a motel bathtub says she feels guilty and ashamed of the crime, but also thinks the system failed her three children.
KFSN-TV reports that 27-year-old Gabriela Espinosa made the comments in a statement read by her attorney, Barbara Hope O'Neill, before a judge sentenced Espinosa on Wednesday to 19 years and eight months in prison.
Espinosa pleaded no contest in May to a manslaughter charge for the 2010 drowning of her 2-month-old son, Gabriel.
O'Neill said Espinosa suffered from post-partum depression and had reached out to social services and police for help that day with no luck.
District Attorney Jeff Dupras said Espinosa had several opportunities to stop the events that led to the drowning and had failed her children.
