FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Central California police officer shot and killed a man who pulled a gun out of his pants that was later determined to be a fake.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said Friday that the officer responded to an emergency call and approached the man. She said he ignored repeated orders from the officer to show his hands.

Mims says the man walked away from the officer; he turned around and pulled the fake gun, and the officer fired.

The sheriff says the man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His name was not released.

Sheriff's spokesman Tony Botti says the officer was responding to a report of a man seen cocking a shotgun and putting it into his pants.

The Fresno city police officer was not injured. His name was not released.
