Chico Junior High School will get a new science building in 2016. The school’s principal, Pedro Caldera said they have a special person on the construction team.

“We’re extremely lucky to have one of our own students take care of us,” said Caldera.

Po Thao is the project engineer on the job and he went to Chico Junior high more than two decades ago.

“It’s a pleasure to come back and do something like this for my old school,” said Thao.

Thao said he was born and raised in a refugee camp in Thailand as a result of the Vietnam War. He came to the United States when he was seven years old with his family.

“It was hard,” said Thao.

Thao said his community invested in him and was determined to make something of himself.

“You just have to push yourself,” said Thao. “If you don’t give up, you will succeed in the future.”
