A former Butte County sheriff’s deputy has been found not guilty of child molestation.

Thomas Michael Sylvia, 37, was arrested last November on suspicion of committing lewd acts with a child under the age of 14.

A Butte County jury returned the verdict Monday afternoon, following the introduction of key DNA evidence, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

Sylvia had been accused, by a family member, of molesting an 11-year-old girl during an overnight stay at his home.

The trial lasted three days, jurors began deliberating just this afternoon.

Sylvia resigned from his position with the sheriff’s office after the accusations surfaced.
