The former San Luis Obispo Police Chief who was reportedly considered a front runner for the top job in Chico, has taken himself out of the running.

Action News Now affiliate KSBY reports that Steve Gesell has decided to withdraw himself from the running for the position in Chico. Gesell told KSBY he doesn't feel like a move to the North State is the best decision for him and his family.

Last week Gesell reached a separation agreement with the City of San Luis Obispo and Chico officials traveled south to interview him for the Chico Chief of Police opening.

KSBY reports that Gesell plans on moving to Arizona and is contemplating a run against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in 2016.

Former Chico Police Chief Kirk Trostle announced his retirement in November, and City Manager Mark Orme began a nationwide recruitment process in January.

Mike Dunbaugh, who was Chico's police chief from 1992 to 1996, is acting as interim Chief of Police.
