Former Chico State student pleads no contest to vehicular manslaughter charges

A former Chico State student accused of distracted driving in a 2013 crash that killed a 5-year-old boy pleaded no contest to a vehicular manslaughter charge in Tehama County Superior Court Monday.

Prosecutors say Tyler Burrone was texting and driving when his truck, towing a horse trailer slammed into a Nissan Maxima driven by 31-year-old Katie Ramsey of Gerber in June 2013. The impact from Burrone's truck pushed Ramsey's car into the path of a big rig, her 5-year-old son Gunner was killed in the crash.

Burrone now faces jail time, five years of probation, 120 hours of community service, 10 presentations to North State schools about the dangers of texting while driving. Additionally Burrone will write a letter of apology to the parents of Gunner.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 18, 2015 at 3 p.m.
