Former Chico High wrestler and Cornell University senior Nahshon Garrett captured the first national championship of his career at the NCAA Division I Championships on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Garrett defeated Iowa's Cory Clark 7-6 in the 133-pound finals. The victory capped off a remarkable collegiate career.
Garrett reached the championship match in the 125-pound weight class as a sophomore in 2014. As a sophomore he finished third. Last season, he placed fifth at 125 pounds.
This season, Garrett bumped up a weight class to 133-pounds and excelled. He went a perfect 37-0, captured a national title and became a four-time All American.
Garrett has no plans of slowing down. He told Action News Now's Ross Field that he is committed to trying to wrestling for the United States in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
