The Modoc County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a U.S. Forest Service firefighter was killed while fighting a lightning fire in the South Warner Wilderness area Monday.
The incident happened around 5:00 p.m.
Officials say a 28-year-old smokejumper, based in Redding, parachuted into the area with two other firefighters to battle the fire. A fallen tree limb is apparently what caused the smokejumper's fatal injury.
His name has not yet been released.
