A community group called Chico Skatepark Solutions is looking to significantly improve the existing skatepark on Humboldt Avenue.
They say it's outdated and inadequate for people who take skating seriously, and that it pales in comparison to parks in much smaller North State cities like Corning, Oroville, and soon Live Oak.
The group's vision is to enlarge and improve the park so it will attract intermediate and advanced skaters of all ages ... and be a destination that can also support events that draw in competitors from outside the area.
Saturday a big event is planned at the skate park that includes a Free Skate Clinic from 10 - 11 a.m., Youth and Adult Skate Demonstrations, and a Skating Competition. There will be music, prizes, food and raffles. There is a $10 entry fee for competition which is grouped according to age and ability. Helmets are required.
Because rain is in the forecast an alternative date for the event is Saturday, February 6th.
Also on the calendar is a Fix Chico Skatepark Fundraiser at the Sierra Nevada Big Room on Saturday, February 20th. It features music by Garrett Gray and the Reincarnated, Dinner, a Silent Auction and Door Prizes. there is a hosted Wine Bar from 6 - 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 each or two for $70. They are available at Chico Bike & Board and The Naked Lounge. You can find out more at (530) 518-3452 or by visiting www.fixchicoskatepark.com.
