Authorities have identified the two United States Forest Service firefighters found dead in an overturned vehicle near the Trinity River Thursday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol Dale Alexander Mendes, 29, of Willow Creek was driving the black Toyota SUV when it ran off Seeley McIntosh Road sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Jason Fritz Price has been identified as the passenger.

The two men were reported missing when they failed to show up at work Thursday morning. CHP and Humboldt County Sheriff Department units searched possible travel routes and were initially unable to locate the missing firefighters or their vehicle.

The men were found after a passerby spotted the SUV submerged in the Trinity River.
