San Francisco firefighters are responding to a 5-alarm fire at a three-story building in the City's Mission District.

The call came in about 1 p.m. Thursday that a retail shop inside a commercial building in the 2600-block of Mission Street was on fire, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

Talmadge said crews are at the scene of the fire, which had not been extinguished as of 2 p.m. She said several people on the scene had to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Because of dangerous conditions inside the building, firefighters on the scene said they had to pull out and are take a "defensive" position.

The blaze sent large amounts of smoke through the neighborhood and has prompted the closure of Mission Street between 22nd and 23rd streets and parts of Valencia and Capp streets.
