The U.S. Forest Service says a firefighter from South Dakota has been killed battling one of more than a dozen wildfires burning across California.
Forest Service officials said in a press release issued Friday night that David Ruhl of Rapid City, South Dakota, was killed sometime Thursday as he was battling a fire in the Modoc Forest. That's about 100 miles south of the Oregon border.
Ruhl, an engine captain from South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest, had been working with California firefighters since June.
Forest Service officials didn't say how he died.
He vanished sometime Thursday and his body wasn't recovered until Friday morning.
The fire in the Modoc National Forest has burned across about 800 acres.
