Today marks the first official day of fire season in the North State, and local firefighters are beefing up staffing right now.
Cal-Fire/Butte County Fire plans to reach peak staffing by the end of this month.
That's a full month earlier than expected.
Cal-Fire Batallion Chief Matt Damon said this is in response to a few things, including, the drought, rising temperatures, and the north winds.
“We’re staffing up additional resources whether that's staffing our
Air Attack Base in the Chico area, staffing bulldozers, [or] staffing additional fire engines,” Damon said.
Cal-Fire’s Chico Air Attack base officially opened today, and is currently staffed and operational. Over the past several weeks, tanker pilots from across the state have trained at the base.
Damon said if you want to help prevent a fire, you should clear brush and make that defensible space around your property during the morning hours, when it’s cooler.
