Fire in vacant Red Bluff building extinguished

The Red Bluff Fire Department responded to a structure fire early this morning at 237 Main Street in Red Bluff.

Firefighters arrived just before 3:20 a.m. and found the building filled with smoke. An initial search confirmed that there was nobody inside the building, but there was evidence of recent occupation by squatters.

A fire was burning in the floor at the rear of the building. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to contain the fire, but crews remained on the scene for an additional two hours to completely extinguish the fire and investigate the cause.

There was no gas or electric service to the building and the entry doors were either unlocked or missing. Investigators were unable to determine exactly what caused the fire, but suspect it was human caused.

The Red Bluff Fire Department would like to remind owners of vacant properties to keep them tightly secured and check on them regularly to prevent squatters from occupying them.
