Fire crews brush up on wildland firefighting techniques

Wildland fire season is right around the corner, and today response crews were 'brushing' up on their firefighting skills.

Despite the wet winter crews say there is always potential for a big fire season.

The refresher course held in Chico’s Upper Bidwell Park is part of an annual training.

Monday's emphasis was on crew safety.

One of the day's most simple, yet most important, scenarios involved fire shelter deployment.

Captain J.P. Gassiot, captain in the Chico Fire Department, stressed the importance of training sessions to the fire crews.

“We have this primary one that we do, once a year, but it's something as fire season approaches that we'll review things, and keep training. Complacency and apathy is just not a good position for a firefighter to be in,” he said.

As temperatures start heating up, wildland fire training for Chico Fire-Rescue will continue.
