Cal Fire officials are battling a 100 acre blaze that started as a control burn near the UC Field Station in Yuba County, but has since escaped fire lines and is now threatening homes.
The fire, which is being called the Cook Fire, was initially started as a Cal Fire training exercise at the University of California Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center north of Smartsville.
The Yuba County Sheriff's Office says evacuations have been ordered for 15 homes along Winding Way and Regents Way in Browns Valley.
The Red Cross is in the process of establishing an evacuation center in the town of Dobbins.
The burn was intended to allow firefighters to experience wildland firefighting tactics in a controlled environment, but strong winds materialized and the fire has jumped containment lines.
