Fiery wrong-way crash in Long Beach kills 1, injures 3

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have reopened a Long Beach bridge where a fiery head-on collision killed one man, and injured three others, including a police officer.

Fire spokesman Jake Helfin says a Mercedes drove onto the Gerald Desmond Bridge in the wrong direction at around 7 a.m. Saturday and crashed into a Ford Fusion and a pickup truck.

Images and video of the crash posted online show two cars were fully engulfed in flames in the middle of the span.

Helfin tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram ( ) that the pickup driver died.

The wrong-way driver and a second man were hospitalized in critical condition. A police officer suffered minor injuries trying to help one of the men out of his car.
