Federal ban sought for animal testing on cosmetics

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hoping to build off recent bans in Europe and India, opponents of animal testing in cosmetics plan to make a big push for a similar prohibition in the United States.

Last year, the European Union banned the sale of new cosmetic products containing ingredients tested on animals. India followed with a similar ban.

A House bill introduced this year by Virginia Democrat Jim Moran won the support of more than 140 cosmetic companies - including Paul Mitchell and LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics.

Backers say they will make a sustained lobbying effort when the bill is reintroduced next year.
