A Chico man's father is speaking out, after his son was arrested for stealing mail and identity theft.

Ken Amundsen says his son grew up in a normal, happy household.

After his brother died in a car wreck.

Ken and his wife divorced.

He said Brandon got hooked on heroin, and he's been stealing to support his habit ever since.

Last week, the 24-year-old was arrested in Durham for stealing mail, and now faces federal prison.

His father, Ken Amundsen, said the last time he saw his son, he asked him if he considered the ethical dilemma in stealing people's mail.

"Do you have any concern for a person might get an eviction notice because their rent wasn't paid," he said, "because you stole a check do you care about that no cause if you didn't you wouldn't be digging in their mailbox taking their mail out."

Ken says he wanted to speak out because he knows many parents are going through the same thing.

He said he wants to start a conversation about prison reform.

He believes many people would be willing to donate their time to teach inmates vocational skills, so when they get out of prison, they have a chance to start a new life.
