A Butte County farmer was able to escape a burning tractor before it became fully engulfed, burning the majority of a rice field.

Cal Fire responded to the fire in Richvale just after 1 p.m. Thursday. According to firefighters, the worker was mowing the rice field when the catalytic converter sparked a vegetation fire.

Butte County Cal Fire Division Chief Chris Haile said they couldn't put the blaze out using a hose so they let the fire burn through the field and caught it on the other side.

Fire crews were on the scene for about an hour and no injuries were reported.
