For Niki and Cevin Cox, painting has always been a passion. Something fun to do in their spare time, but in 2010 that all changed. "We just did it for fun until my husband lost his job, and we were facing losing the house, and stuff," according to Niki Cox. "So, we decided to have a big yard sale."
Cevin told Action News that yard sale quickly turned into an impromptu showing for the families art. "We had hundreds of canvas's in the yard sale, and people just started picking them up left, right, and center, and probably had a hundred people like, you should start a business."
The next night the family started a Facebook page to showcase their work, and Cevin says it didn't take long for people to notice. "The next morning someone from Virginia had found us through friends of friends on Facebook, and ordered a painting, and we haven't stopped since."
For customers who want to order a print from the gallery, the process is simple. Just go onto the Cox Family Gallery Facebook page, click on a picture, and make an order. But what's even more impressive about these artists, is the bulk of their orders are custom jobs. Niki says "a lot of times people will just submit a photo, and say can you paint this? I took this photo of whatever, can you paint this? Yeah, we can do anything." Cevin added "we just ask people to describe, to the best of their ability, what they'd like, and we give them a whole list of sizes that we can paint, and prices, and if they need a specific size, we can do that as well."
In the past year and a half, the gallery has continued to catch the eye of many browsing the internet, and the family has received between five and ten custom orders a month. Niki says the family wouldn't have it any other way. "We don't always have millions of dollars, because it's not a steady income, but doing what we love, couldn't ask for better."
