A family of four has been rescued after they became stranded while searching for a Christmas tree in Butte County.

Butte County sheriff's spokeswoman Miranda Bowersox says the family, from Paradise, was in the Philbrook area searching for a Christmas tree when their car broke down Monday afternoon.

Fortunately, the family was able to seek refuge in an empty cabin.

Butte County Search and Rescue crews began searching the area Tuesday morning after somebody reported that the family had not returned home as expected.

A rescue team located the family near the cabin at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office is asking everyone to use caution when traveling to mountain areas.
