BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - The FAA says a small plane is missing after disappearing from radar about 10 miles south of Bakersfield in central California.

Agency spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Piper PA32 was last detected around 4 p.m. Saturday while flying from Reid-Hillview Airport, east of San Jose, to Henderson Executive Airport near Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gregor said the FAA has issued an alert notice, which is the first step in initiating the search-and-rescue process.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford said it was rainy and cloudy in the area south of Bakersfield around the time the plane went off radar.
