A man alleged to have been responsible for several car burglaries is in custody in Chico after he was involved in yet another car break-in.
Mathew Morrison, 25, a transient in Chico, was arrested in the area of West Sacramento and Nord avenues around 6 a.m. Dec. 26 after he was identified through eye witnesses breaking into a vehicle parked in a driveway on Victorian Park Drive.
Eye witnesses noticed Morrison going through the back seat of the vehicle. The witness was familiar with the vehicle’s owner and did not recognize the man and called police. The witness attempted to confront the man, who got on a mountain bike and fled the scene.
During the follow-up investigation, officers seized a significant amount of stolen property in Morrison’s possession. The property was used to connect Morrison to at least seven other burglaries across Butte County.
Morrison remains in custody at the Butte County Jail. His bail is currently set at $53,000. Officers said more charges are expected to be requested in the near future
Butte County Sheriffs and Chico Police issued a warning that they are seeing a rise in vehicle thefts and burglaries over the last several weeks, particularly on the west side of Chico.
Law enforcement officers encouraged citizens to become familiar with their neighborhoods and report suspicious activity. They said, if safe to do so, please provide dispatch with vehicle license plate numbers and a detailed description of the suspects.
