'Eye sore' building to get face lift by local artists

An old Chico building will get a new look this spring.

The owner of Focal Point Discount Landscaping, David Alaways, thought a building he owned on East 20th Street was an eye-sore.

But he saw the flat, segmented walls and decided it's the perfect place to pay tribute to Chico history through iconic murals.

Colliers Hardware in Downtown Chico came up with the idea to bring in high school and college students as artists. Alaways said he thought it was a great idea.

"How do these people get their starts, how do you become a good muralist,” he said. “Chico has created some of the best muralists in the country. We need a whole new crop of them. I’m willing to let them at least get started on my building!"

Painting begins next month with about 30 murals to be completed by the end of April when there will be an unveiling event.

Community mural ideas are welcome. Those interested in participating head to ActionNewsNow.com and click on the news links.
