Explosion shuts down Hwy. 99 near Fresno

Flames have reportedly been shooting 100 feet into the air and Highway 99 near Fresno is closed in both directions after a gas explosion caused a large fire just after 2:30 p.m. Friday.

According to KNVN affiliate KCRA, a Pacific Gas & Electric gas line has exploded. The Fresno County sheriff's office has a firing range nearby and the explosion may have been on the range property.

Fresno County Emergency Medical Services officials confirm eight people are injured.

"We have a minimum of eight burn injuries," said Dan Lynch, emergency medical services director. "We don't know the severity of the burns and we have eight ambulances on scene with the fire department."

Community Regional Medical Center is preparing to receive five to eight burn victims. The first helicopter has landed at Community Regional with a patient around 3:10 p.m. according to a hospital spokesperson.
