A jury in Humboldt County convicted Steven Bullock of torturing and murdering a catholic priest two years ago, the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office reported Monday.

In addition to murder, Bullock was convicted of arson, carjacking, two counts of burglary and vehicle theft.

Gary Lee Bullock is accused of breaking into the church rectory on New Year’s Day 2014, and torturing reverend Eric Freed of Saint Bernerd’s Catholic Church before beating him to death.

Freed’s body was found later that day after he did not show up for morning mass.

The 46-year old Bullock originally pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Now, a jury must determine in a separate trial whether the defendant was legally insane at the time of the killing.

Court officials said it could take several weeks for that trial to get underway.
