Empty butane canisters found in lower Bidwell Park

Chico city crews uncovered what appears to be a drug dump site in lower Bidwell Park Tuesday morning.

A park ranger told Action News Now the crews found more than 20 empty butane canisters and mason jars near a trash can One Mile Recreation Area.

Officials suspect the materials were used to make butane honey oil, a form of concentrated cannabis produced through a process involving butane. Manufacturing honey oil is a highly combustible process and often results in fires.

Park officials say it is very uncommon to find hazardous materials in Bidwell Park.

Butte County drug agents were notified, and said they've recently received several reports of similar dump sites and businesses and apartments across Chico.
