Eight people were arrested for allegedly failing to pay child support during a sweep in Tehama County Thursday morning.

The defendants - eight men- are accused of skipping out on a total of $83,000 in child support.

California law does not allow the disclosure of people arrested on civil warrants, but Red Bluff police say seven of the men were delivered to the Tehama County Superior Court.

The eighth defendant, Vincent Contreras, 59, of Cottonwood, was booked into jail when officers found evidence of marijuana cultivation inside his residence. Additionally, Contreras owes $30,000 in child support and had three felony warrants for failure to pay child support.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Tehama County currently handles 4,222 cases of child support with 82 percent of those cases having past-due amounts totaling over $49 million in back support.
