Durham Elementary Prepares to celebrate Grandparents and State Award

Durham Elementary School is among the 400 elite schools in California to receive the California Distinguished School Award. The announcement came from Principal Barbara Jelicich just days before the school celebrates Grandparents Day Friday. Some 700 grandparents are expected to share this day with students and the community. The event runs from 9am to noon. The theme is "Grandparents make ordinary lives extraordinary."

California Distinguished schools are selected on the basis of their extra curricular activities and programs. Durham Elementary chose to highlight its Reading Discovery program and Volunteer Program. Durham has more than 6,000 daily volunteer visits in a year ,from parents, community members, Foster Grandparents and high school tutors.

Shasta and Neal Dow Elementary Schools also received the California Distinguished School award this year.

The schools will receive the award in Sacramento June 9.
