Robert Duncan, the reigning CCAA player of the week, led Chico State to a huge 72-64 victory over UC San Diego Friday night at Acker Gym.
Duncan finished with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, but it was his all-around play down the stretch that proved to be the difference in the game.
Duncan was every bit the part of a 9-0 run that began with Chico State trailing 60-58 with under 4 minutes left in the contest that pushed the Wildcats to their eighth straight win.
Duncan pumped in a reverse lay-up to tie the game at 60. Then he assisted on a bucket by Tanner Giddings that gave Chico State a two-point lead. Duncan followed that up by feeding Jordan Semple for a bunny. But all that was easily outdone by what came next. After a Semple block, Duncan went to work near the top of the arc, he moved left and then delivered a killer crossover Tim Hardaway would be proud of as two Tritons fell to the ground. Duncan got in the paint and scored a lay-up, plus the foul, which sent the packed student section into a frenzy.
Duncan buried the freebie to give the Wildcats a 67-60 lead with 1:28 to play, and the rest is history.
On top of his 19 points, Duncan finished with five assists and five rebounds. Giddings matched his career high with 16 points, and Semple totaled 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Mike Rosaroso added 12 more points and equaled his career high with five assists to go with five rebounds.
Chico State improves to 15-5 overall and 12-3 in the CCAA.
Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona will battle for sole possession of first place in the conference Saturday night at Acker Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.
