The driver who fled the scene of a fatal traffic accident in Redding late Sunday night has been identified as 24-year-old Lester Stanley Folsom of Redding, according to the Redding Police Department.

According to a department press release, 30-year-old Ruben Calderon, the man killed in the accident, was driving north on Churn Creek road when he lost control of his car and collided with Folsom who was driving a Volvo in the southbound lane. Folsom reportedly admitted to investigators his involvement in the crash and leaving the scene in a dark colored SUV before police arrived. He is on probation for a DUI arrest and has his license revoked.

Because of the time between the accident and when Folsom was located, his level of impairment at the time of the crash could not be determined. Folsom has not been arrested due to the extended medical treatment he needs.

Investigators stated they are still looking for the SUV which may have a “SF” sticker on the back window. Moore said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, but did confirm Folsom did know the driver of the dark SUV.

The department is also investigating whether or not Calderon was also under the influence during the time of the incident. Moore stated the coroner’s office will be conducting a toxicology analysis on Calderon and will know the results within the next week.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Redding Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with Shasta Secret Witness.
