The driver in a stolen vehicle pursuit in Redding this weekend has been identified at 33-year-old Steven Anthony Motley. Motley is currently listed in critical condition at an area hospital.
The Redding Police Department also released the charges facing Motley after a wild pursuit on Saturday, which includes felony evasion, hit and run, carjacking, theft and felony possession of a firearm.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon when a Redding Police Officer attempted to pull over a stolen struck. The driver of the stolen truck failed to stop and a pursuit ensued west down Rancho Road. The chase initially ended when the truck failed to complete a turn on Alta Camino Drive and went through a brick wall and into a front yard. The suspect then reportedly ran on foot, circled back, and eventually entered the Redding Police car. Responding officers spotted the suspect enter the police car and the suspect again fled on foot. Officer were eventually able to stop the suspect who resisted arrest.
According to the department, while the suspect was being arrested he reportedly stopped resisting and “stopped breathing”. Arresting officers began administering CPR and the suspect was taken to an area hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition. All of the officers involved are on paid leave and their names are being withheld at this time. The incident is being further investigated by The Shasta County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office.
